The ConfigSafe Evaluation Software is intended to demonstrate the core features of the ConfigSafe family of products. The evaluation software is not intended to represent a single ConfigSafe product. ConfigSafe lets you quickly resolve problems by:

• Identifying changes to your Registry, INI Files, System Asset Files, System Hardware, Network Connections, and operating system software versions.

• Restoring a system to a previously working configuration in just seconds.

1. Take a snapshot of your configuration before and after making any major changes to your system.

2. If your system is no longer functioning properly, use the Restore function to return your system to a previously

working configuration by selecting the appropriate Snapshot from the Restore Snapshot list.

All ConfigSafe version 2.0 products include a new feature called System Assets. Through Profile Management, System Asset files to be tracked and optionally archived can be specified. System Assets can be specified by directory or wildcard path known as an "Asset Pattern". Archived System Asset files can then be restored, if the need arises.

An asset pattern of "c:\Windows\*.sys" would track all files with the extension .sys in the Windows folder of the C: drive. For more information on the System Asset feature, see the ConfigSafe Online Help section entitled "Viewing Configuration Changes, Viewing Asset Changes". Online help can be accessed by clicking on the HELP button from the ConfigSafe main screen, and selecting CONTENTS from the drop-down menu.

In addition to the basic core features shown in the evaluation software, the ConfigSafe Desktop Edition provides the ability to create and edit multiple configuration profiles. This allows you to snapshot your system using different profiles, and switch between configurations in just seconds. Additionally, Desktop Edition users can schedule snapshots to be automatically taken at predefined intervals (such as daily, weekly, monthly, etc.). See the ConfigSafe Online Help section entitled "Introduction to ConfigSafe" for more information about the features and operation of ConfigSafe. The Network Edition builds on the core features of ConfigSafe while adding specific functionality to enhance the support of networked PCs. In addition to ConfigSafe LAN Client software (for Windows 95/98 and Windows NT), the ConfigSafe Network Edition includes the Standard Network Manager. The ConfigSafe Network Edition Standard Network Manager can provide disk space savings as well as a reduction in support costs by utilizing network resources for:

• Shared program and profile folders

• Centralized profile and scheduling management

• One step software updates

The ConfigSafe Network Edition product is sold in LAN Client License Packs with the Standard Network Manager included. The purchase of additional LAN Client License Packs provides a software refresh for all existing ConfigSafe LAN Clients on the network.

Profile Administration:

Profiles define the files, directories, Registry keys, and system assets that will be tracked by ConfigSafe. Through Profile Administration, a network wide profile can be defined and maintained for all clients. Additionally, the administrator has the option of allowing clients to define their own profiles.

Profile Folder Management:

Profile folder locations can be specified by a network administrator or the administrator has the option of allowing clients to define their own Profile folder locations.

Program folder locations for the ConfigSafe executables can be specified by a network administrator or the administrator has the option of allowing clients to define their own Program folder locations.

Automatic Snapshot scheduling can be performed by the network administrator with the Event Scheduler.

Run INSTALL.exe from the ConfigSafe installation disk or disk image. Follow the on-screen instructions.

ConfigSafe NT requires a certain level of privileges to work properly on a system. These privileges differ upon the access level to the software. The user profile must include the following privileges to perform the indicated functions:

"Back up files and directories privileges"

"Back up files and directories privileges"

"Managing and auditing security log"

"Restore files and directories"

Typically, by default, members of the Administrators group will have the Rights necessary to perform all the ConfigSafe functions. By default, members of the Backup Operators group will have the access rights necessary to perform the automatic snapshots. Make sure any users which will have snapshots taken on a system have the necessary "Back up files and directories privileges". Otherwise, a snapshot simply will not be taken.

ConfigSafe lets you view the changes which have been made to your system configuration during any given time period. Press just one button and you'll have access to all the changes which have been made to your:

• Configuration Files- (system.ini, etc.)
• Registry
• System Hardware - Drives, memory, processor, and more
• Directories
• System Assets

• Network Connections

On the main screen you select the time period for which you wish to identify configuration changes. ConfigSafe will show you the changes made to the system in that time period.

Changes Starting: Beginning of the time period

Changes Ending: End of the time period.

The toolbar at the top left corner of the ConfigSafe main screen allows you to select which information you wish to view:

• Configuration File Changes
• System Changes
• Drive and Network Connection Changes
• Directory Changes (updates to files in directories)
• Registry Changes
• System Asset Changes

As you view the files, registry, or directories screen, the differences in the items between the dates in the from and to boxes are displayed using the following keys:

(+) New Entries Entries that have been added are shown in blue and marked with a plus sign (+).

(-) Deleted Entries Entries that have been deleted are displayed in red and marked with a minus

sign(-).

(->)Changed Entries Entries that have changed are shown in green and both the original entry and the new

entry are displayed. The original entry is shown first.

ConfigSafe lets you restore your system files and Registry to a previously working system configuration. In seconds, ConfigSafe restores you to a working configuration. To do so, select the RESTORE button on the ConfigSafe main screen. Then, follow the instructions to restore your system to how it was on the specified date.

If your Windows 95/98 system won't boot into Windows, use the ConfigSafe SOS.exe program to Restore from MS-DOS mode.

If your Windows NT system fails to boot, use the Emergency Repair Disks (which should be created during NT installation or using the NT Repair Disk Program). On disk 2 of the Emergency Repair Disks you have the option to restore the registry to the original settings, do so. Then reboot the system and run ConfigSafe to restore to the desired configuration.
